Late Night Action!

What?! – Late Night Action is an original live talk show that features local guests, celebrities, personalities, bands, comics, and more. Think Jimmy Fallon or David Letterman set to a Portland soundtrack.

The show is hosted by PDX comedy veteran, and Action/Adventure ally Alex Falcone (Helium Comedy Club, Bridgetown Comedy Festival) and will feature Alex’s breezy crowd work, original writing, and quick wit. He’ll be supported by a dynamic group of professionals from all over the Portland comedy scene, most notably sidekick: Bri Pruett (Curious Comedy, Fall of the House, Bridgetown Comedy Fest), and a great sketch team that will feature the best and brightest comedic voices from the Pacific NW.

Like FOTH and Captured… a new 60 minute episode in the ongoing story premiers every weekend (4 episodes in all) and while the plot points are drawn by Action/Adventure’s writers, the dialog is completely improvised by the actors, making for an exciting and ever changing theatrical experience. Audience members can catch the entire story over the course of four weekends, or stop in for just one helping of Action/Adventure’s inventive brand of theater.

And what’s more, Action/Adventure is inviting several friends from Portland’s ever-impressive music scene to come be part of the show and provide a ‘mini-concert’ of sorts inside the theater experience. *Musical guests currently slotted to be featured include:

April 19th through May 5th, we’re oh so very proud to be co-producing The Working Theatre Collective’s most recent production, Something Epic/Everyday:

Researched, created, and performed by Tara Coen, Noah Dunham, Noelle Eaton, and Devon Wade Granmo; with direction by Ashley Hollingshead, SOMETHING EPIC/EVERYDAY is a mash up of found text, song lyrics, and everyday life that explores the concept of creating your own American Dream – whatever that means.

Whitney Streed and Jessie McCoy are heading up a residency in Action/Adventure Theater and we’re very happy to be opening up our doors to them and their organization. Check out this great article featuring them in The Portland Mercury:

Local stand-ups Whitney Streed and Jessie McCoy are two comedians who have been active in creating and fostering the comedy community, and their new Action Comics showcase takes it a step further. Not only are they starting a new event on the last Friday of the month, they’re using proceeds from that show to fund Comics in Action, a support system and training to help nurture Portland’s growing scene.

Driven to the edge of endurance by alienation and self-loathing, these lonely strangers are ready to try anything to get out of their own heads. Anything. Even love. This weekend’s lineup for Late Night Action with Alex Falcone!

Friday, Feb 3rd

Jenn Hunter and David Saffert (bonus points for guessing which is which). Two of the funniest, most talentedest people I know, and my, what beautiful smiles they both have! He is a serious classically trained pianist (heh) who uses his pianist skills (snort) for serious art, like the opera and the ballet. He also does an impression of Ellen DeGeneres that will make you swallow your gum (in a good way!). She is a local director, actor, improv comedian, educator, and a member of Theatre Vertigo. I dare you to watch these two and NOT be entertained. Won’t happen. Never has happened.

Competing with these two too-funny folks for laughs and toothpaste ad spots is our official comic of the night, Christopher Huizar. He plays ComedySportz professionally and this youtube set leads off with a joke about how burritos are messy! It’s funny ‘cuz it’s true!

Rounding out our Friday night are musical guests the The Bottlecap Boys. I could describe their music as “infectious, boot-stompin’ folk,” as they do on their website, but better just have a listen for yourselves. I’m not yer papa.

Saturday, Feb 4th

What?! A whole different show on Saturday, you say? Yes, we say. A whole different show on Saturday. Because “like that” is how we’re crazy.

Another interminably talented friend of the Action/Adventure family, Matt Hopkins will be stopping by. You might know him as Andrew from Fall of the House, but he doesn’t only play a comic book artist on stage t.v., he also drew this real-life graphic novel, COGNITION: The Robot Uprising. He’s currently building creepy cool stuff for Grimm, which is apparently a television show, and generally wandering the streets being awesome.

And because no evening is complete without a ukelele player, we have the very ukelele-playing Hanna Robin, who has committed to writing one ukelele song per day, some of which she’ll play and sing for you. I am not in the possession of any samples, so you have no choice but to come to the show and give her a listen!

Our musical guest is The Siren and the Sea with stripped down shanties sung so sweetly you’ll be reaching for your ball of wax.

Saturday’s comic Jeff Oliver is new to the Portland scene, and we’re lucky to have him! I don’t know much about his material, but his participation in a Corvallis Farmer’s Market “Meet a Black Guy” booth inclines me to dig his sense of humor. In a rare instance of reporting something that actually happened, Fox News covered the story.
